San Diego Hula Academy offers ukulele classes suited for both adults and children (6 years +).
Ukulele students will learn ukulele parts, tuning, chords, strumming patterns and mele (songs). While students will learn many Hawaiian songs, they will also be learning many common contemporary pieces.
Classes are held in person with the option to Zoom as needed.
A limited number of loaner instruments are availble upon request. Students should plan to purchase their own instrument shortly after trying a complimentary class. SDHA can assist with recommendations or purchasing the instrument for you.
‘UKULELE CLASSES

ʻUKULELE 1
‘Ukulele 1 is an introduction to ‘ukulele, and assumes no prior musical experience. This class is geared for any age group. All students are welcome whether you are new to ‘ukulele or just haven’t played in a long time. Our intimate class sizes also allow for extra attention where needed.
Students will learn ‘ukulele basics - including tuning, caring for and holding the instrument; learning strums and chords; sight reading music and music theory. Every classtime is spent working on proper technique, strumming and even learning new songs.
Loaner instruments are available and assistance with purchasing your own ‘ukulele is available.

ʻUKULELE 2
For those students who have a few chords under their belts, ‘Ukulele 2 is the perfect intermediate class for students to progress in challenging themselves with next level chords, picking, strumming and songs.
We teach all genre of music including but not limited to rock and roll; country, reggae and cultural music. Students will uniquely learn Hawaiian and Tahitian mele (songs) learning the culture and language in addition to the ability to play for live dancers.
While not required, all students have the option to perform at our annual Ho’ike (recital) and holiday show.

ʻUKULELE 3
‘Ukulele 3 is an advanced class for those who are comfortable with sight reading music, have a base understanding of music theory, and have a variety of chords and strums.
This class stimulates students with advanced theories in strumming and picking techniques including bar chords, chord “shapes”, “chuck’ rhythms, island strums, 4 finger picking, and transposing songs into other keys.
Students are encouraged to learn to sing in English, Hawaiian (‘olelo Hawai’i), Tahitian and occassionally French encompassing the variety of cultural songs they will be learning.
